The Steely Damned 2 - Steely Dan Tribute
Hank Easton – guitar and vocals, Band Leader
I’m the current leader of TSD2. I’ve been a Steely Dan fan since I bought my first album’ “Katy Lied”. It was the song “Bad Sneakers” that I absolutely loved, especially the guitar solo. To me their music is the perfect blend of all my favorite styles. I was hooked.
Easton was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, and began playing guitar at age five. He studied classical guitar, jazz and music theory at The Cleveland Institute of Music from early childhood until age 17. He graduated with a B.S. from The Ohio State University in 1985. Moving to San Diego in 1986, Easton’s artistic fluency and versatility as a guitarist and musician immediately established him as an in-demand performer.
Easton is a virtuoso guitarist, singer, songwriter and entertainer. A seasoned professional, he's currently performing throughout southern California although he has and does travel all over the U.S. His repertoire covers a wide variety of music, from classic rock and pop, to electric guitar classics, modern blues as well as classical and jazz. Not to mention his plethora of quality original compositions.
Doug Booth - guitar, keys, vox and whatever we need!
Doug is an integral part of TSD2! He sings on virtually every tune and plays a variety of instruments!
An instructor and a performer of guitar and bass. Beginning at the age of ten, Doug has studied piano, flute, and percussion, in addition to the bass and guitar. Interested in many different styles of music, he eventually found that his ear "bent" towards the jazz guitar styles of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and early George Benson. By age fifteen, Doug was chosen to play with the Santa Clara Honor Jazz Band and a year later with the California All State Jazz Band. You can hear Doug Booth on a variety of recordings including the recordings of the jazz fusion group Ars Nova and Zappa guitarist Mike Keneally's internationally released CD's.
Ruby (Etoile Presnell) – vocals and percussion
Ruby is an original member of TSD. She has a great sounding voice and sings difficult parts on every tune. She’s one of the few vocalists I’ve ever met who can also play percussion well! This comes in handy for TSD2. She will also be singing lead on a few tunes!
A professional music career spanning 30 years has seen Ruby perform at such venues as the Long Beach Blues Festival, House of Blues, Monterey Blues Festival, Tipentinas ( New Orleans ), and with the San Diego Symphony, just to name a few. She has performed with such artists as James Moody, Charles Brown, Jr. Wells, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Poncho Sanchez and CJ Chenier and others.
Tripp Sprague – saxes, EWI, keys, percussion
Tripp is simply a great musician. He can do many things other than play the hell out of the sax! Arrange horns, play keys, percussion, harmonica. He’s just super musical.
Tripp Sprague is a jazz saxophonist based out of the San Diego area. Tripp also plays flute, chromatic harmonica, and EWI. He has performed extensively with the areas top jazz musicians including singer Kevyn Lettau, bassist Bob Magnusson, as well as Tripp’s brother guitar player Peter Sprague. Tripp‘s musical versatility has lead to invitations to perform from international acts such as jazz singer Mose Allison, Kenny Loggins, Motown legends Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, and The Temptations. Tripp has recorded on numerous C.D.s with such artists as Todd Rundgren and Kim Carnes and. Tripp also co-produced and performed on the self titled CD from the group “Blurring the Edges” which won the “best pop-jazz ” album at the San Diego Music Awards.
Gary “Temper Tantrum” Taylor – drums
I’ve known Gary since the late 80’s and have worked with him in many of my own projects and in the studio. Original founding member of The Steely Damned. Super versatile and musical drummer with a smooth and steady groove. Pretty much plays any style and nails it! Gary is ta the top of the A list of drummers in San Diego. Why temper tantrum? Come to the show and find out!
Gary Taylor’s been playing drums for 50 years. Currently playing with the bands Ron's Garage, Gonzology,
Mitch Grant - Sound engineer
If you’re doing a Steely Dan tribute band and you don’t have a guy running sound that knows what he’s doing, you might as well stay home! In fact most of the youtube videos of The Damned are from shows he was mixing, and that’s not a coincidence. Mitch Grant is the best I’ve ever worked with. In fact if he can’t do sound I most likely won’t book a show.
Another original member and leader of TSD2 horns, Chuck has got a great tone, plays all saxes and is easy to work with! So glad he was interested in putting the band back together!
The Five time San Diego Music Awards winning Saxophonist has long been recognized
as one of the best horn players on the music scene. His award winning sound, high
energy stage presence, versatile style have brought him to the stage with some of the
entertainment industry’s most noted performers. Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Bobby
Caldwell, The Coasters, Platters, Spinners, Sugarland and Big Mountain are just a few.
As a freelance musician Chuck has toured the globe opening for such acts as Ray
Charles, Elton John, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Chicago, Kool & the Gang,
Etta James, and Ashford & Simpson. He is seen as a key force in the horn sections of
several of the best bands in San Diego and Los Angeles including NRG, Haute Chile,
Big Time Operator, The Steely Damned, Rockola and The Soul Persuaders. Also an
active studio musician, Chuck can be heard on countless Jingles, Soundtracks and
Jim Reeves – bass
Jim “The Groove Master” Reeves did his first show with The Steely Damned with a mere weeks notice! He nailed it, and has since been our bass player. Jimmy comes to us from Kenora Ontario, Canada. He toured Canada extensively and, while based in Winnipeg, recorded numerous jingles and sessions for CBC Radio’s french network. After moving to California, he attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood, graduating with honors as the outstanding bassist of the year award winner. After graduation, he was hired by M.I. as an instructor, teaching private lessons and live playing workshops. Since then, he has played all over Canada and the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and Japan.
Rob Gironda - keyboard 1 and vocals
Playing keyboard for a Steely Dan tribute band is incredibly hard and tedious! If the keyboard parts are changed using different voicings or chord extentions it simply doesn’t sound right. Also figuring out all those voicings is uber tough. Most of the charts out there have mistakes! Thank God Rob was interested in being in this band, otherwise it might not have happened.
Besides being an integral part and founding member of the original Damned, Rob is Musical Director for San Diego’s premiere variety dance band Atomic Groove. He has a Bachelors degree in Music, teaches and composes music for TV & film. Works all over southern California both solo and with bands. Thanks Rob!
Larry Grano – lead and background vocals, percussion, drums
Larry has a great stage presence and a powerful and versatile voice. His intonation is excellent and he knows how to blend his voice with the music. He also has a great sense of humor, which is very important in this business. Especially in a band this size! Always enjoy working with him live or in the studio!
Kevin Esposito – trombone
Another original member of TSD Kevin is at the top of the list as a trombone player. He has also arranged several of the charts for TSD. Super cool guy, easy to work with and comes to play!
Mark DeCerbo – vocals and guitar
Mark has a great ear, great voice and is the ultimate team player. He was just singing in the last version of TSD, but now he has some integral guitar parts, and I keep giving him more. It seems every time I listen to some of these tunes I hear another part nobody is playing! He will also be singing lead on a few tunes as well!
Doug Meeuwson – trumpet
The newest member of our group! Doug plays his butt off, and I don’t think he ever plays a wrong note, even if it’s written. He’s also writing some charts for the band. He’s been a great addition already!
Doug is first call trumpet player based out of San Diego, who plays a variety of music with a variety of top-notch bands including Salsa, Jazz, Commercial and Classical.
